Trusted Contacts: let your beloved ones know you’re okay

Google has just launched a new app, designed to help you share your location with people you trust. It has been baptized as Trusted Contact, and it allows you to add close friends and family, who will be able to know where you are at all time.

Whenever a contact asks for your location, you will be able to deny that request, something that makes the app a little bit more interesting. Anyway, if you don’t answer to that request, the app will automatically share your location. As it is linked to your Google history, your phone won’t need to be on for this to work.

If that was not enough, approved contacts can know how much battery your smartphone has left and if you have been “active” recently. Although it may seem unattractive to a lot of people (because of privacy issues), the truth is that it is an application that can be very useful under certain circumstances.

It can be used, for example, with parents who want to know where their children are and be more relaxed that way (something necessary in places with little security), and even by adults who live under unsafe circumstances and feel constantly exposed to kidnapping or something similar.

So their trusted contacts will have access to their location. Trusted Contacts is now available on the Play Store and can be downloaded by anyone with an Android 4.1 onward.

If, for any reason whatsoever, we are in a place with bad coverage or, directly, have no battery, the app will send your contacts your last known location, so you don’t have to worry too much.

If you had thought about giving your child their first phone this Christmas, it would perhaps come in handy if you installed this application, because being things the way they are nowadays, an extra layer of protection is never unnecessary. The app can be downloaded for free from Google Play.

If we are sharing our location, we can also add a status with text messages to give more information about our status. For example, if Trusted Contacts automatically shared our location because we couldn’t reject it on time, we can say we are well.

The Google contacts app allows us to add all those contacts of confidence we want. In the apps’ configuration, we will see if we have ignored contacts and configure our locations history.
